On the surface, the makeover of the Sierra Centre mall is a good thing. But while waiting for the faded, chipped and downright oogly red facing to be replaced, what a hassle in the parking lot, eh?
Mammoth’s town Planning Commission, arguably the most critical government body other than the Town Council, was in disarray at press time, with outspoken commissioner Therese Hankel ousted on a 3-2 vote by the council and with Lanie Somers unexpectedly announcing her resignation in October. A visibly upset Hankel vowed she’d run for Town Council. Her term was to have lasted until 2008. Meanwhile, longtime commissioner Somers’ term was to end next June.
It's hard to say if spending $4 million on a re-do of Mammoth Mountain's Main Lodge third floor is going to be worth it in the end, but in the short run it sure seems like the right thing, if for no other reason than the rockin' new bar. View image

In spite of the first significant storm of the season, skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skaters and the rest of the winter throng are staying home in droves this weekend and next week. That means the slopes of Mammoth Mountain will once again be a kind of locals’ paradise, as will the aisles at Vons.
