Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory, now a member of Barry Sternlicht's globetrotting Starwood Capital gang, is preparing for his second trip to Russia in as many months as the company looks to acquire Russian properties.
In particular, Starwood, the principal owner of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, is looking to possibly acquire Krasnaya Polyana, a resort in the Caucasian Mountains near the Black Sea.
Gregory confirmed the company's interest in the resort in conversations last week.
In addition, Gregory said he was involved in helping Starwood eyeball real estate ventures in Moscow.
The Krasnaya Polyana resort, however, has tripped Gregory's trigger for the same reason it has interested skiers from around the world, such as mammoth adventure photographer Christian Pondella.
"The mountains, as the crow flies, are 30 miles from the Black Sea," Pondella said in a December, 2005 interview with Mammoth Monthly magazine.
"So the storms come right off the sea and just plaster the place. And what is the exact opposite of Mammoth is that it's very rare for the wind to blow. So when a storm comes through, the snow just drops straight down. How many times do you get off a chair on a mountain where it's perfect powder after a storm comes through?
"The powder is forever, and there's not as many people getting after it."
