Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is spending about $4,000 a day feeding a workforce that has been idled by the lack of snow so far this season.
Ski Area executive John Armstrong said on Tuesday, Dec. 5., that Mammoth Mountain has operated a "soup kitchen" each evening for about 600 employees.
The ski area opened the facility on Nov. 21, had a layoff for Thanksgiving, then has had nightly meals each night since Nov. 26. He said he anticipated the kitchen would keep going until Dec. 16, even if the Sierra gets significant snow in the next series of storms, which could begin by Friday night.
Armstrong said only about one-fourth of the work force is on the job. The work force, largely made up of young adults from overseas, are lift operators, bus drivers, equipment managers, food service employees, ticket takers, etc.
The feed station is at Canyon Lodge, Armstrong said, and runs from 5-6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Jack Copeland, the director of human relations, said the ski area is extending rent relief during the dry spell.
