Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Reno issued a winter storm watch for Mammoth and the southern High Sierra beginning Thursday, Dec. 6 and continuing into the early part of the weekend. Snowfall amounts that could exceed two feet are expected, the weather service said.
After hedging their bets earlier in the day, the forecasters said the path of the storm on Tuesday afternoon became "a little more certain, and favors the central and southern Sierra, generally from Carson Pass south to the Mammoth Lakes area.
"However, a slight change in track would greatly affect snowfall amounts farther north."
In a report issued at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday, the weather service said snow will develop Thursday afternoon and intensify Thursday night and continue Friday. The forecasters said snowfall amounts "may approach or even exceed two feet in the High Sierra."
As of Tuesday afternoon, the weather service said the storm watch will continue through Friday evening.
A strong warm front will approach the Eastern Sierra on Thursday, with snow levels beginning at about 5,000 feet, then rising to 6,500-7,500 feet before dropping back down behind the front. The town of Mammoth is at 8,000 feet, with Main Lodge at 9,000 feet and the top of Mammoth Mountain at 11,052 feet.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area has received just six inches of snow this season, but has made up for it by covering several runs with an eight-to-fourteen inch base of artificial snow. The ski area opened one run on top of the mountain last weekend, and as of Monday, Dec. 3 had opened Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, Thunder Bound Express, Discovery Chair, Lower Panorama Gondola, along with Stump Alley Express and Upper Panorama Gondola.
