Forecasters at the National Weather Service, as well as local forecaster Howard Sheckter, say there is no snow in sight for the snow-starved Sierra, although a system may possibly rumble through the mountains around Groundhog Day.
"Just when you thought it could not get any worse (lack of snow) weather wise, it does," wrote Sheckter in a post on MammothWeather.com. "The pattern will apparently go from cold and dry, to warm and dry later next week."
He wrote that the next chance of snow might be Groundhog Day (Feb. 2).
Forecasters in Reno, meanwhile, said a weak weather system will move into California on Thursday, but predicted that it won't do much good insofar as snow is concerned.
"The system will be moisture starved, so it will not add any weather," the forecasters said in a post to their Web site.
Sheckter described the Sierra as being in the "twilight zone" between North American weather systems, but added that there is a weather combination that could drop some snow in early February.
"That pattern is what dreams are made of during a winter like this one."
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area reports a base ranging from 36 to 48 inches, but there are many places where dirt and plants poke through, as well as rocks. At the top, only Cornice Bowl is skiable, and on the back side, many sketchy spots exist.

The operative word, however, is "dreams."
