The number of skiers and snowboarders at Mammoth Mountain is down by 23 percent, while revenue at the ski area is down by 18 percent, according to Rusty Gregory, the CEO of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
Gregory said, however, that he and other executives were pleased with the numbers in light of the worst snowfall winter since 1976-77.
"It's much better than you'd think that this kind of winter would yield. I think we had strong momentum built from Southern California. And I also think that Mother Nature can give us a lot worse than we had it."
The ski area also is coming off a record season in 2005-06 in which 55.7 feet of snow fell and the ski area stayed open until July 5. As of Wednesday, April 18, Mammoth had just 213 inches for the season -- 17.75 feet.
Last season saw the most snow of any March on record, 15.75 feet; and the it had the biggest April in history -- 8.75 feet.
