Yosemite National Park put fire restrictions into place on Friday, May 18, in what officials said could be a "potentially long and severe fire season."
"As of May 21, Yosemite Fire Management will have four Type III Engines staffed seven days a week and the helicopter staffed seven days a week," said Adrienne Freeman, spokesperson for the park.
"This is due to an unusually dry and warm winter and spring," Freeman said in a news release. "Snowpack from the May 1 snow survey was 29 percent of normal for the Tuolumne River drainage and 28 percent of normal for the Merced River drainage.
"Fire season and burning restrictions are being announced approximately a month early," she said.
