Mammoth Is Interesting
New Trail Eyed For Lakes Basin
by Mammoth Local Staff

The U.S. Forest Service has proposed a new equestrian and hiking trail between Lake George and McCloud Lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, aimed at relieving the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit.

The pack outfit lost one of its designated trails along Lake Mary Road from Wildyrie Lodge to Horseshoe Lake as a result of the construction of the new bike path that is to connect the Town of Mammoth with Horseshoe Lake.

Under the proposal, bikes would not be allowed on the trail because of concerns about conflicts with horses and mules.

The proposed trail would be about 1.3 miles and would reestablish an old trail that ran from the Crystal Lake Trail to the McCloud Lake Trail.

The Forest Service is seeking written or verbal comments from members of the public who are interested in or affected by this proposal.

In particular, if you have information you feel the Forest Service may not be aware of, or you feel you have issues regarding potential effects of this proposal, please send these in writing to: Mammoth Ranger Station, P.O. Box 148, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, Attn: Jon Regelbrugge (FAX 760-924-5537, voice 760-924-5553).

A Forest Service spokesperson said the public input will be addressed in the environmental analysis that will be developed over the next several weeks. Please send your comments or issues by Oct. 19, in order to be most helpful in the analysis, the spokesperson said.
