The Inyou National Forest inteds to issue new maps of off-highway routes through the forest, according to Marty Hornick, who announced to plan at a meeting of the Mono County Collaborative Planning Team.
Hornick, the route designation project leader said the nationwide project intends to map and designate a transportation system in the National Forest. The goal of the process is to provide a stable and sustainable system of roads providing a network of routes for recreation access.
"We have a mishmash of roads dead-ending and paralleling one other," Hornick said in his presentation. "We are identifying which roads create tremendous recreation outlets that are not causing damage and what these roads access."
The project will publish a free and annually updated "Motor Vehicle Use Map" of existing routes.
The route designation proposal will be analyzed through an environmental process consistent with the National Environmental Policy Act this fall. The project is scheduled to be complete in December 2008.
Similarly, the Bureau of Land Management has published a pamphlet for sport utility vehicles.
"Motor Touring the Eastern Sierra: Mono County" describes ten routes and will be distributed at visitor centers throughout Mono County.
