Mammoth Is Interesting
Meridian Blvd. Narrowing Set
by Mammoth Local Staff

The long-awaited narrowing of Meridian Blvd. will occur in the summer of 2009, town officials announced. The project will involve bus turnouts, bike lanes and the removal the traffic light at Minaret Rd. In its place will be a roundabout, according to the plans.

The four-lane road currently is 64 feet wide. It will be narrowed to 45 feet and will include two travel lanes and a center turn lane, along with bike lanes and sidewalks.

Additionally, the project will include new curb, gutter, sidewalks and improvements to the storm drainage system.

The project will be designed next summer, town officials said, with bids to go out at the end of the summer season. Construction would begin in the summer of 2009.

The boulevard, which connects Juniper Springs to Old Mammoth Road, is in sorry shape.

The existing pavement has significant appearance of wear and failure.

Sections of curb and gutter have failed or are beyond repair. Maintenance of many of these failures is an ongoing problem and the road is in need of rehabilitation.

Rider comfort is impacted due to the reflective cracks and uneven areas of the road. The portions of the road have a sidewalk on the north side which is in need of rehabilitation. Sections of the sidewalk are broken and cracked and suffer from other discontinuities that impair the usability of the sidewalk.

Meanwhile, the traffic light will be re-positioned to the intersection of Meridian and Sierra Park Rd., across from the Minaret Mall shopping area.
