Mammoth and Bishop both landed on a list of "50 Best Places To Live" in the April edition of Men's Journal magazine.
Mammoth made the list of "Most Active Towns," along with such places as Hood River, Ore.; McCall, Idaho; Carbondale, Colo.; Mountain View Arkansas and Bozeman, Mont., among others.
Bishop, meanwhile, made the list in the category of "Meccas," along with such places as Taos, N.M., Last Chance, Idaho, and Moab, Utah.
"Western-wear emporiums still outnumber mountain shops in Bishop, and the skinny young climbers piloting jacked-up trucks with scabbed hands and faraway stares seem to like it that way," the magazine intoned.
"Keeping mostly to themselves, they're focused on what matters: year-round bolt-clipping on the rust-red cliffs of the Owens River Gorge, highball boulders at the famous Buttermilks and inexhuastible big-wall routes in Yosemite, only few hours away.
Mammoth, meanwhile scored in all five of the major categories in the "Most Active Towns" list, including skiing, hiking, biking, windsurfing, climbing and, oddly enough, whitewater.
The magazine wasn't specific about where the whitewater was, exactly, which is kind of a shame for those who might want to try it, much less see it.
Even so, the magazine said, "Four major recreation areas (including Yosemite) give Mammoth an edge-of-the-world feel."

rust-red cliffs of the Gorge? Whitewater?
Sounds like the author is intimately familiar with the area.

Yeah I know. It's a curious thing to me, really, why mags like Men's Journal, Outside, etc. have to write what I would call "hype" journalism. Why would anyone have to hype Bishop or Mammmoth, you know? But they do, and it's a style. Sadly.
