Mammoth Mountain Ski Area cancelled its 2007 "Life and Wellness" conference on Friday, Aug. 10, a spokesperson announced.
"Participation numbers from both this year and last year indicate that this event may be ahead of its time," said Dana Vander Houwen, the communications manager for the ski area, which was to produce the event on Aug. 24-26.
She said that people who already signed up for the event would receive a full refund and will be contacted by the organizers of the event.
The conference was to be a weekend of activities and learning opportunities focused on total well-being. Keynote speakers were to be Dr. Pamela Peeke and David Simon, M.D.
Vander Houwen said the ski area has not given up on the event, which last year lost $300,000, according to Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory.
"Looking at the Town’s General Plan and Ski Area’s Master plan, we know wellness amenities are a part of our community’s future and we may re-visit hosting a similar event in the future," Vander Houwen said.
Last year, the Life and Wellness conference drew just 400 people, many of them locals who received a discount on tickets.
This year, Vander Houwen said the event drew considerable interest from people outside Mammoth, but local interest was not enough for the ski area to host the event.
She said the Mammoth Festival of Wine, Music and Food, scheduled for Aug. 17-19, would go ahead, with Big Head Todd and the Monsters headlining the event in spite of losing about $100,000 last summer.
After the two events, Gregory said he was excited by their futures.
"I'd argue that these were decent investments for these kinds of events," he said at the close of last year's first-ever "Life and Wellness" conference.
"It's important for the future of our community to have these kinds of things, and we were happy to step forward and do them instead of just arguing about at the Town Council level."
The then-named "Wine and Jazz Festival" drew between 1,000 and 1,500 people last summer.
Both events were added to the calendar late last year.
However, even enough lead time wasn't enough to save the Life and Wellness Festival this year.
