The long-awaited construction of the 5.3-mile Lakes Basin bike path will begin Sept. 4, Mammoth town officials announced. A public meeting to explain the project also was scheduled, for Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
The $12 million project will take two full summers to complete, said Ray Jarvis, the public works director.
“The Lake Mary Road Project has been a community goal for several years and this mobility enhancement will benefit the community in a number of positive ways," Jarvis said in a press release.
"The Class 1 bike route will not only add 5.3 miles to the existing trail system, but more importantly, make it a safe and family-friendly bike and pedestrian route to and from the Lakes Basin."
The project involves the construction of a paved bike lane for bicycling and walking, separated from traffic, adjacent to Lake Mary Road from Minaret Road to Horseshoe Lake. It will be built along with extensive road rehabilitation of Lake Mary Road between Minaret Road and Twin Lakes.
Spiess Construction will build approximately 40,000 feet of an eight-foot wide asphalt bike path, erect 27,000 sq. feet of retaining walls, build several prefabricated bridges, install concrete curbs and gutters, lay down 4,000 feet of pavement, along with erosion control and drainage improvements.
Street lights will also be moved, along with traffic signal modifications at the Lake Mary Road and Canyon Boulevard intersection.
The overall project has been designed to meet the Bicycle Standards and Guidelines adopted by the State and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to enhance bicycle safety and user access to the Lakes Basin.
The project is primarily funded with State and Federal Transportation funds, Forest Service funds and local Developer Impact Fees (DIF), Jarvis said.
To introduce this significant and extensive project to the community, the Town of Mammoth Lakes scheduled a public meeting on Thursday, Sept. 13, in Suite Z (Minaret Village Shopping Center) at 4 p.m.
The town staff, along with representatives from Spiess Construction and the Federal Highway Administration will brief public on the scope, impacts, schedule and benefits of the project.
Those wishing to attend should RSVP to Community Relations Manager, Stuart Brown at sbrown@visitmammoth.com or call (760) 934 2712 ext. 210.
