Horizon Airlines would begin twice-daily flights to Mammoth in December 2008, but would not provide summer service to Mammoth Yosemite Airport until 2012, the airline announced in a document submitted to federal aviation authorities.
Under the cautious plan, Horizon would fly 76-passenger turbo-prop planes from Los Angeles (LAX) to Mammoth's small, high-altitude airport , which now has a designation of MMH. The twice-daily schedule would run between December and April.
The airline, a division of Alaska Airlines, said it projected to increase the frequency of flights to a maximum of eight flights per day by 2011.
Stuart Brown, the town's community relations manager for the Tourism and Recreation Department, said in a press release that "the aviation activity forecast also considers the addition of two flights per day during the summer months beginning in 2012."
Horizon's plans were contained in a report to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is working with the town of Mammoth to nail down issues associated with a crucial Environmental Impact Statement.
The FAA is scheduled to host a public workshop for the draft of the document on Dec. 18 in Suite Z of the town offices between 4-8 p.m.
The proposed aircraft is the Bombardier DHC 8-402 (Q400 Dash 8), which can seat up to 76 passengers. The Q400 Dash 8 is part of the Bombardier Dash 8 family of turbo-propeller driven passenger aircraft.
Interested people who would like to purchase a copy of the Draft EIS on CD were advised to contact the assistant town manager Karen Johnston at 760-934 8989 ext. 228.
Copies are also available for review at the Mammoth Lakes Library.
