Mammoth Is Interesting
Firewood Season Extended
by Mammoth Local Staff

The firewood season has been extended to Nov. 18 on account of fair weather and numerous "no chainsaw" days during the hot, dry summer, the Inyo National Forest announced on Friday, Oct. 26

Current supplies of firewood can be found in the Aqueduct area, as shown on the map provided with a purchased Fuelwood permit.

The Swall area near Witcher Meadows is now closed to cutting as all accessible wood has been removed.

The Mt. Whitney District has a special lottery cutting area at Horseshoe Meadows. Contact the Mt. Whitney Ranger Station at 760-876-6200 for more information.

Fuelwood permits are on sale at local Forest Service Ranger Stations and Visitor Centers until November 18. Maps showing areas open to cutting are available with a purchased Fuelwood permit. Fuelwood permits are $14 per cord with a two cord minimum purchase. The maximum purchase remains at six cords per person and 12 cords per household.

The Inyo again will institute shutdown days (for chainsaw use) based upon the daily Project Activity Level.

Permit holders can call 760-873-2555 for information on shutdown days. For further information on the fuelwood program, contact your local Ranger Station or Visitor Center.

Fuelwood permits may be obtained at the following locations:

Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center in Lee Vining; 760-647-3045, closed Tues-Wed.
Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center in Mammoth Lakes; 760-924-5500
White Mountain Ranger Station in Bishop; 760-873-2500
InterAgency Visitor Center; 760-876-6222 in Lone Pine.
