Heavy snow has prepared Mammoth for a robust holiday season.
More than three feet of new snow fell on Mammoth Mountain in the storm that ended Thursday night, following winds that gusted up to 107.6 miles an hour at the summit of the 11,052-foot peak.
The new snow had created a base of 59 inches of snow -- still historically low. But it also allowed Mammoth Mountain Ski Area to keep to its schedule of opening of Cloud Nine Express lift on Friday.
The new dumpage erased the second straight disappointing November. This season, only six inches of snow fell on the ski area, following a 2005 snowfall total of just five inches. Both those totals were the worst since a four-inch total in 1992-93, which turned into one of the heaviest snowfall years in Mammoth Mountain history -- 51 feet, 5 inches.
On Thursday, 10 inches of new snow fell by mid-day, accompanied by ferocious winds. At the Ski Patrol weather station at the summit, a gust of 107.6 miles an hour occurred at 11 a.m., and winds averaged 50 miles an hour through the morning.
The ski area said it is close to opening 100 percent of the resort by the weekend.
