National Trails Day: Volunteers Needed
by Mammoth Local Staff

In honor of National Trails Day, the non-profit groups Mammoth Lakes Trails and Public Access (MLTPA) and Friends of the Inyo are leading activities in Mammoth Lakes on Saturday, June 2, 2007.

MLTPA is leading two educational hikes on a trail identified in the 1991 Mammoth Lakes Trail System Plan as The Sherwin Trail. Participants are asked to meet at Mammoth Creek Park at either 9:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. with sunscreen, comfortable hiking shoes, water and a camera. The hike will cover a variety of land uses and jurisdictions and is a must for anybody interested in trails and public access master planning in Mammoth Lakes.

Friends of the Inyo will lead an effort to "spruce up the trails for summer" in the Lakes Basin. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center at 9:00 a.m. for a trolley ride to the Lakes Basin area. All participants should bring gloves, hat, sunscreen and water. Several groups will be deployed to different lakes to conduct trail clearing, general trail maintenance and to pick up trash. Friends of the Inyo will provide tools and trash bags with a complimentary lunch provided by local businesses.

Participants in either of these efforts are asked to send an e-mail to: rsvp@visitmammoth.com with either MLTPA or Friends of the Inyo in the subject line.
