For years people have assumed that there was a churning, roiling, white-hot magma chamber deep under Mammoth's Resurgent Dome, and that it was responsible for pushing the geologic formation upwards. At any time, the assumption went, forces within the earth -- an earthquake? -- would push the magma to the surface. Ka-blooey! But it isn't so, as it turns out.

I have a friend, Brad, who fled a middle-management career to find a more active life in Mammoth. With his multiple skills and optimistic attitude, he cobbled together a full plate of jobs, made a lot of friends, and found a lot of truth in a respectable amount of skiing and climbing. Brad became fit and enthusiastic about life, but one day he just announced that he had to leave. He explained that he'd been living half off of his credit card and couldn't make ends meet here, much less build a financial future. In a matter of hours he was driving to Sacramento to start over again, in commercial real estate. The Eastern Sierra has a rare beauty that calls as if from on high. But coming, like Brad, to find a freer life and then riding off on a horse of hard reality has become a revolving-door theme.

Having spent most of my adult life living on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, I've often felt like I was a resident of Nevada, even though the map says that we're technically still in California. I guess that makes sense linguistically, if not geographically; after all, this is the Sierra Nevada, not the Sierra California. For one thing, the East side sure looks a whole lot more like Nevada than most of the rest of the Golden State. The lifestyle here is also a lot closer to Carson City than Culver City. Being on the back side of California inspires a sense of geographic insecurity, as well. Folks know Northern California, and they sure know Southern California (don't even mention USC), but what about Eastern California? We might as well be on the moon.
