Thinking Snow?
In addition to adjusting to altitude at Mammoth (Main Lodge is at 9,000 feet and the top of the hill is 11,,000) it might be wise to tone up a little. Here are some fitness routines for both skiers and snowboarders. These will make a ski trip even more enjoyable.

Big Weekends Coming Up
On one of the biggest weekends of the season Jan. 11-13, people crowded onto Cloud 9 Express, formed long lines at the McCoy Station gondola, filled the lunch tables and bars, skied, rode snowboards, skated at the new ice rink, watched football and generally had a great time on good snow. There's more coming.

Protected Paradise on Chair 8
"Shelter From The Storm" is not just an old Bob Dylan song. It becomes a primary concern on those cold and gusty days on Mammoth Mountain when not only is access barred to the top, but Chairs 3, 5 and 9 are also shut down due to dangerously high winds and limited visibility. That's when Chair 8 becomes an attractive option. Situated at the Canyon Lodge base, the old-style fixed-grip triple cuts narrowly through tall trees except when crossing one run, leaving your exposed skin in relative comfort. Turn right when leaving the chair and enter Hully Gully. This wide face is also protected from the elements, and the snow is usually very good. Groomed at least every other day, it is low enough to keep drifts from accumulating, but a two- or three-inch dusting maintains its softness. Even when heavily used, which is rare, either side will always provide satisfying carving.

The New Scene
Egad what a snarl over at the old Chair 9 this past weekend, huh? Skiers and snowboarders headed over to the new lift, "Cloud Nine Express," only to get caught on the 405 during the morning rush. Thank God for the lunch break and the San Diego Chargers. By the time the Bolts kicked off at one o'clock, the whole ski hill more or less emptied, except for the women and children and the baffled Euros. At that point, Mammoth Mountain basically turned into California's largest bar. The Jagermeister people ought to give us an award. Me? I caught the game in fits and starts, leaving wherever I was at the quarter breaks, play reviews and injury breaks. That gave me plenty off ski time, although it caused the usual confusion. What's L.T. doing on the sideline? Where is Rivers? By the time the Good Guys had beaten down Indy the ski day was basically over but the evening turned out to be just great. The ski hill brought back its Festival off Lights fireworks show over at Canyon Lodge, and it was really fantastic.
