This chic new wine bar is charting culinary territory before unknown in the Eastern Sierra. With more emphasis placed on delectable tapas plates and an eclectic wine list (complete with Mammoth's only wine cruvinet!), Petra's is one of the few new eating establishments that -- get this! -- was started by actual locals. European, American and other worldly wines grace the menu, and are served in one-and-a-half, three, or traditional six-ounce glasses. Of course, you can always have a bottle if you so desire. And with all these wonderful libations comes the food. You can have full-sized grilled salmon or penne pasta and smoked duck plates, but the popular option is to make a meal out of the small plates. Favorites from this list are the artichoke strudel, ahi tuna mango spring rolls and potato gnocchi with lobster claw meat. Of course, the menu changes often -- even nightly -- so this is just a sampling. A little insider hint to Petra's rookies: ask for the table by fireplace. With couch seating for five, this is a truly elegant Mammoth experience.
