June Meadows Chalet
by Brandon Russell

Located half-way up June Mt., at the top of Chair J1
$$

A smaller, cozier version of the old Main Lodge Cafeteria at Mammoth, the June Mt. Chalet has avoided the upscale invasion and is better for it. While it surely lacks in the class and variety of the up-scaled Mammoth Mountain cafeteria, the lack of crowds, rustic vibe and superb alpine views to the north make the Chalet unforgettable. Typical cafeteria fare is what June faithful want, and that is exactly what they get. Hamburgers, hotdogs, salads and daily specials are the norm. Mexican and Italian plates pop up from time to time, and the prices are slightly lower than those at Mammoth. A day at June Mountain is a flashback to the 1960s, and the Chalet, looming precariously over the deep glacial valley, is a reminder of what skiing the Eastern Sierra used to be.
