Green Mammoth Blues

The more I think about that Town Council meeting a month ago, the more I waver between befuddled and befumed, as in mixed up and angry.

The Council on Wednesday, Feb. 7, adopted the "U.S. Mayors Climate Control Agreement, " a goody two-shoes thing that seeks to reduce greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), that are associated with global warming. Who can argue with that?

The problem is that Mammoth officials all pat themselves on the back, then go to work the next day and try to figure out ways to convince more people to hop in their immense, gas-guzzling SUVs, drive six hours up and six hours back (Southern California) and, while here, enjoy 4WD, dirt bikes, snowmobiles and the ski area.

There are lots and lots of people who can argue over this stuff all day, and they do. What I get all owly over is the duplicity of it all. Everyone can think they're doing everything they can to help out with the Global Warming thing, all the while encouraging people to do exactly the opposite.

Let's see the Council pass a resolution against 4WD, snowmobiles, dirt bikes and SUVs and see how far that gets them. Yeesh.

Plus, there's the total irony that Mammoth, being a belching, seismic volcano, for Heaven's sake, dumps between 50 to 150 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per day out at Horseshoe Lake.

Yeah, green Mammoth, all right.
