Being Mammoth

March 27, 2007

You know you're a true local if ...

You want a dog park because the Inyo National Forest just doesn't cut it, somehow.

You know that the speed limit on Main Street, a business corridor, is 35 miles an hour, while Meridian Blvd., a residential corridor, is 40 miles an hour.

You know that one of the best restaurants in the Eastern Sierra is in a gas station and only open in the warm months.

You know that there's good fishing in the winter along the Lower Owens.

You've skied The Hose.

You know how The Hose came to be.

You know how to get to Coyote.

You know how to find The University of Mammoth, and that the school's mascot name is the Mushers.

You know about Sunday bar burgers at Skadi.

You understand completely why the town can support three liquor stores but has trouble with theater and yoga.

You know where to find good-to-decent corn, at any time of the day.

You're not flummoxed by that guy walking three burros down the middle of the road.

You figure out how to beat the parking situation at The Village.

You know that the first day of summer is the Fourth of July, no matter how nice it may seem in March, April, May and June.

You know that Chidago Canyon isn't where most people think it is.

You know how to spell, and pronounce, the police chief's name.

You know where to find free golf balls across which street from Sierra Star.

You know how to negotiate the Post Office parking lot.

You know which of the public elected officials actually have clout, and which ones only say they do.

You figure that this list can go on and on, and that I wouldn't mind.
