Dogtown, U.S.A.
June 26, 2006
The canine crowd in Mammoth has rarely been more giddy.
First, the town's veterinarian, Gaylon TeSlaa, was so hot to promote Mammoth as "Dogtown, U.S.A.," that there was talk of him teaming up with Tailwaggers to create a kind of wellness facility for hounds, to be in the old Blondie's restaurant along Main Street.
It didn't work out, but it is said that Barry S. Sternlicht, chief of Starwood honcho at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, would give his blessing to the move.
"This is where dogs come to revitalize their souls and their well beings," Sternlicht supposedly said, although I couldn't confirm the quote.
"It's an interesting opportunity here," he is to have said. "One thing you don't have is a dog spa/hotel, and this is California. You're supposed to have one."
Meanwhile, canine companions over the weekend gathered around their television sets, awaiting the mayoral returns from the Montclair District of Oakland, where poll officials were counting ballots.
That district routinely elects a dog as mayor, over the usual objections of the cat crowd.
Given the last elections in Mammoth, it was suggested that perhaps we follow Montclair's lead, so to speak.
"We should unleash an election here!" exclaimed one dog woman.

I am the former owner of Tailwaggers Too, the business that recently went out of business due to the unfortunate circumstances that occurred during the "Teaming Up" with Dr.TeSlaa. There will be no teaming up--in fact, there has been no more Tailwaggers Too since April 7th, 2006, when we were asked to move out of the Blondie's building after having been in operation there for five days. The giddy citizens of Mammoth should be brought up to date with current information. Yes, Mr. Sternlicht, there was and should be a doggie spa here in the "Dogtown", that Dr.TeSlaa is "hot to promote", but it is no more. It was an interesting and very successful venture and there are a lot of unhappy people who utilized the daycare that now have no one to care for their dogs when they need it. In fact, I get several calls on a daily basis from former clients and prospective clients who are dismayed to find that Tailwaggers Too was closed. I would love to reopen the business. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to find locations in Mammoth that will allow for doggie day care. If anyone has any workable suggestions, we're open to them.

Torque for mayor! Mammoth's favorite bull dog promises plenty of sticks at Horseshoe and clean snow at Shady Rest.
