Mammoth 2011

May 11, 2006

Town Manager Robert F. Clark on Wednesday, May 10, presented Mammothists with an inch thick "Long-Term Forecast" that details what Mammoth could become in five years.

Assuming that Mammoth will continue to have some kind of growth, Clark painted a picture in which Mammoth, by 2011, will be "a village in a park," with a vibrant commercial core and a workforce that will live in the town.

Mammoth would have a Main Street promenade, frequent bus service, regional air service to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas, outdoor festival sites and more activities and events.

It's an ambitious document, but it's not a pipe dream. Clark has laid out clearly the economic factors that will make all those things possible.

"Municipal government often becomes too focused on making it through the coming fiscal year and fails to consider the steps it should take now in order to address the longer-term needs of the community," Clark wrote in the document.

Dream on! Based on the incompetence demonstrated so far by the Town's leadership, it is doubtful even this vision will ever come to reality. Let's see a "sinking" Village with no parking, and no real heart and soul; lawsuits a plenty, another bus down the drain. But, what the heck, Mayor Wood saw the light on his recent visit to Europe, where he suddenly discovered what a "Village" should look like and now he "has a vision of what the town should look like". Guess that was his first stray off the farm. What a revelation. Shouldn't he have had that "vision" before taking the post!
