Walkin' The Walk In Mammoth

November 30, 2005

I’ve been dodging cars, trucks, SUVs and skateboards in Mammoth for so long now I hardly know what to think about the new crosswalks.
They’re lighted, by God, meaning … what?
Not all of them, mind you. But the crosswalk on Main St. in front of the Post Office, the crosswalk across Main St. at Laurel Mountain and a coupla crosswalks across Meridian are all wired now, waiting for finishing touches before they’ll start working.

All a Ped has to do now is hit a button and lights embedded in the street will start flashing.  Judging by how the exact same lights work on Old Mammoth Road, this is very cool.
It kinda means that the age-old sport of trying to get across the streets is lessened a little, but there’s still Upper Meridian, where not only do the drivers just blatantly speed above the 40 m.p.h. limit, but they do it on flat curves that are icy.
Try taking your stroller across that, huh? Or your dog?
Those are bear and deer crossings up there, too, but I digress.
