Suddenly, It's Autumn In Mammoth
September 26, 2005

Man About Town
That was one short summer, huh?
No doubt there will be warm days ahead in the weirdly named Indian Summer (can someone please explain that to me?) and probably there will be some tolerably warm days past that, even.
But for the most part, it's over and we're headed into our famously short and beautiful fall.
The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is closed, and there is a dusting of snow at the summit.
The Scenic Gondola Ride is closed.
Pals are disappearing left and right on vacation as Mammoth settles in for the shoulder season. A.C. is headed for the Grand Canyon and a float trip. B.N. and E are headed to Italy. Venice and Tuscany. See ya in a month, youse two. Restaurants have closed or have shortened their hours.
There was nothing happening inside Vons this morning, except for some checkers chatting among themselves.
At the condo complex up near Chair 15, the fences around the tennis courts are down, the nets will go as soon as it stops raining and the courts will become, once again, spots for snow storage.
Aspens splash the mountainsides with brushstrokes of yellow fire, descending out of the low clouds and fog.
Today, a cold rain is falling in town and there's snow at 10,000 feet.
Summer of 2005, see ya.
