Fred Fisher of Earthjustice, RIP
August 27, 2005
This came in the other day, on the Earthjustice web site:
Fred Fisher, a founder of Earthjustice, died of cancer on August 16, 2005. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Susan, his sons Matt and Jon, the rest of his family, and his legions of friends and admirers.
In the late 1960s, Fred and a law partner, Don Harris, worked with national Sierra Club leaders to establish an organization of lawyers who would enforce environmental laws when the government would not, and even enforce them against the government itself. In 1971 the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund opened its doors, with Don as president and Fred as vice president. (The name was changed to Earthjustice in 1997.)
Fred continued to be a very active member of the Earthjustice board of trustees for the rest of his life, as his close friend and colleague Don still is. Professionally, Fred was a highly respected maritime lawyer in San Francisco, but protecting the environment and even-handed enforcement of the laws were his passions.
The full online memorial is on the Earthjustice Web site.
