An inside-out makeover

    In Mammoth, the Center of the Universe is at Vons Supermarket, somewhere between frozen foods and the pharmacy.
    The Universe is about to be remade, at just about the worst time imaginable.
    Assistant manager Mike Menendez confirmed what had been rumored—the store will be topsy turvy beginning August 1 and ending the end of October for a remodel.
    Had this happened last year, the first  month of the remodel would happen when more people were in Mammoth than in any month, and it would have ended during the first month of the ski season.   
    So heads-up, people:
    If you’re coming up from the South, you might want to consider Bishop as a shopping alternative while the remodel is going on at Mammoth.
    Manor Market, the curiously-spelled Joseph’s Bi-Rite and, of course, Vons, all are in Bishop.
From the North, there’s a very fine small market in Lee Vining (Mono Market).
